He was an American inventor  and businessman. Born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio; the seventh and last child of Samuel and Nancy Edison. When he was seven his family moved to Port Huron, Michigan and Edison lived there until he struck out on his own at the age of sixteen. He had very little formal education as a child, attending school only for a few months. He developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera , and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. He was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of mass production  and large-scale teamwork to the process of invention, and because of that, he is often credited with the creation of the first industrial research laboratory .

August 12, 1877, is the date popularly given for Edison’s completion of the model for the first phonograph. It is more likely, however, that work on the model was not finished until November or December of that year, since he did not file for the patent until December 24, 1877. He toured the country with the tin foil phonograph.
